Brand Upon the Brain!
"A phantasmagoric story that could be a collaboration between Edgar Allan Poe and Salvador Dali. It's an astonishing film: weird, obsessed, drawing on subterranean impulses, hypnotic."- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"One of the year's 10 best films! Delightful...wonderful!" - New York Times
"6 STARS! It’s one of the damndest things you’ll ever see on a movie screen." -Time Out Chicago
Equal parts childhood reminiscence, Expressionist horror movie, teen detective serial and Grand Guignol reverie, Maddin's latest delirious creation is a silent film like none you have ever seen before. BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! depicts a twelve-year-old Guy as he spends his youth confined to an island orphanage presided over by his enigmatically malevolent mother and father. When famed teen detectives Wendy and Chance begin an investigation into the mysterious events that plaque the orphanage, they launch the island's inhabitants into wild turmoil.
Narration by Isabella Rossellini. Musical score by Jason Staczek.
