Douglas Trumbull’s mind-bending 1983 film Brainstorm may be best known as Natalie Wood’s last film before her untimely drowning death in the middle of production, but it is also a solid science fiction drama that was well ahead of its time.

The story begins with two brilliant scientists, Michael Brace (Christopher Walken) and Lillian Reynolds (Louise Fletcher), who have developed a revolutionary device to record and vicariously experience other people’s feelings and perceptions. It’s an invention that has seemingly endless possibilities – both good and bad. In the meantime, Michael’s marriage to Karen (Natalie Wood), a product designer, is on the brink of splitting up. When Michael’s boss (Cliff Robertson) decides to sell their invention to the military, Michael and Karen must put aside their differences and keep the invention from getting into the wrong hands.
