Fitzcarraldo

Fitzcarraldo

A film by Werner Herzog
Starring Klaus Kinski, Claudia Cardinale, José Lewgoy

A man who dreams of building an opera house in the Amazon comes up with a scheme to make it rich by hauling a steamship over a mountain in order to stake his claim to acres of rubber trees.

The story of a would-be rubber baron’s (Klaus Kinski) attempt to build an opera house deep in the Amazon jungle is one of the most ambitious and fascinating testaments to the power of filmmaking. Herzog’s determination to shoot the most daunting scenes of the film without models or special effects, including a sequence requiring hundreds of native Amazonians to pull a full-size, 320-ton steamship over a small mountain, was a five year, life-threatening ordeal for the filmmaker and crew.
