Ishtar: The Director’s Cut
A film by Elaine May
Starring Warren Beatty, Dustin Hoffman, Isabelle Adjani
Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman brilliantly play a pair of untalented lounge singers who travel to Morocco for a single gig at the behest of their incompetent agent. Once there, they manage to find themselves embroiled in the midst of a Cold War standoff.
Wildly misunderstood at the time, the film was a notorious box office bomb. Plagued with production disputes and excessive budgets, it effectively ended the directing career of Elaine May (of the University of Chicago comedy duo Nichols and May). Since then, Ishtar has come to be known as a work of comedic genius, thanks in large part to its understated performances and the razor-sharp wit of its lovably awful songs, co-written by May and Paul Williams. Still unavailable on DVD, we are very excited to present a new, Elaine May-approved cut of the film!
