It Happened One Night

A film by Frank Capra

It Happened One Night follows a news reporter and a runaway heiress who fall in love while traveling cross country on a bus. It’s a classic of the screwball comedy genre and an excellent mockery of the confines of the newly-enforced Production Code!

Ellie (Claudette Colbert) is a spoiled heiress who decides to run away from her family. Aiding her in her journey is Peter Warne (Clark Gable), a reporter with a good eye for a juicy story. In exchange for an exclusive, Peter agrees to escort Ellie to her snobbish aviator beau. But a lot can happen on a cross-country bus trip!

This screwball comedy was the first to take home all five major Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Clark Gable), Best Actress (Claudette Colbert), and Best Adapted Screenplay.
