My Uncle
A film by Jacques Tati
Starring Jacques Tati, Jean-Pierre Zola, Adrienne Servantie
Restored print! Rediscovered version!
In this wonderful film, Jacques Tati contrasts the provincial home life of his hilarious alter ego M. Hulot with the modern, contraption-filled home belonging to his sister’s family, the Arpels. The gentlest of satires, MON ONCLE was Tati’s first film released in color and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. But its simultaneously produced doppelganger, MY UNCLE, was forgotten and nearly lost. With opening credits, street signs and the Arpels’ dialogue in English — though the townspeople still speak in unsubtitled French — MY UNCLE was meant to be more accessible, but is also subtly different and contains scenes missing from MON ONCLE.
