Tennessee’s first successful play opened in 1944 in Chicago and was his first adapted screenplay. Amanda (Gertrude Lawrence) is an aging Southern belle who wishes to provide that life for her crippled adult daughter Laura (Jane Wyman). Kirk Douglas plays Jim, Laura’s childhood crush, who comes to dinner one night at the behest of Amanda.
