In occupied Paris, an actress married to a Jewish theater owner must keep him hidden from the Nazis while doing both of their jobs.

When the Nazis arrive in France, Jewish director Lucas Steiner (Heinz Bennent) hides in the basement of his theater for the duration of the occupation while his wife, Marion (Catherine Deneuve), performs in the current play. But when Marion is forced to choose between her husband and her country, things get complicated. Gerard Depardieu co-stars in this moving drama directed by François Truffaut.
