Trainspotting

Trainspotting

A film by Danny Boyle
Starring Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller

Set in Edinburgh, Scotland, Trainspotting follows the hilarious yet tragic lives of a group of friends struggling with heroin addiction in the late 1980s. Featuring wonderfully droll performances by Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner, and others, the film manages to be stylish and exuberant while simultaneously exposing the devastation of drug abuse. Trainspotting was helmed by Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later) and its screenplay, adapted from Irvine Welsh’s novel, was nominated for an Oscar. The film features an acclaimed soundtrack perfectly reflecting both the rush of heroin and its inevitable comedown, including songs by Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, New Order, and more.

I liked this movie, and not just because it made me loads of cash. It was a highly successful adaptation and I really don’t think that any group of people outside of Danny, Andrew and John could have pulled it of with quite the same panache. —Irvine Welsh
