A film by Nikita Mikhalkov
A RUSSIAN REMAKE OF 12 ANGRY MEN, Sidney Lumet’s riveting 1957 jury room drama. This new version has its jurors considering the presumed guilt of a young Chechen accused of brutally murdering his adoptive father, a Russian officer. The racism and cultural divide between the Russian jurors and the Chechen defendant are at the heart of their certainty. At first only one man holds out against conviction, but incrementally each juror is brought around to seeing the wider reality in which the crime was committed. The film features seamless ensemble acting with Mikhalkov himself in the role of the juror who delivers the final coup de theatre.
