Told mostly in flashback, rich, neurotic Texas oilman Kyle Hadley (Robert Stack) marries the beautiful designer Lucy (Lauren Bacall), only to become worried his wife is infertile. When Lucy announces her pregnancy several years later, Hadley drunkenly suspects his aide Mitch Wayne (Rock Hudson) had something to do with it.
