French Film Festival! Monty Python! Snowpiercer!

Thursday, July 31st, 2014

Happy Thursday Music Boxers,

Vive le cinema! The Chicago French Film Festival begins TONIGHT! Come to our Opening Night Reception for pre-show drinks and appetizers at 6:30pm, followed by a screening of Me, Myself and Mum at 7:30pm!

The Chicago French Film Festival runs from July 31st-August 5th and features screenings of 10 of the best contemporary French films, including our Festival Centerpiece presentation of Violette on Saturday and Closing Night film Jealousy on Tuesday evening. Check out the full schedule and purchase festival tickets now.

Also, this will be our final week for Snowpiercer. Come take the post-apocalyptic thrill ride that everyone has been talking about!

Love Monty Python, but couldn’t make it to London for their reunion show? On Wednesday at 7pm, check out Monty Python: Live (Mostly), a one-night-only rebroadcast of the legendary comedy troupe’s (likely) final performance together, filmed in front of the sold-out crowd of London’s O2 Arena.

Next Thursday, join Chicago Tribune sports columnist Steve Rosenbloom and movie critic Michael Phillips for a 25th anniversary screening of Field of Dreams. You’ll want to catch this baseball classic with your whole family.

Finally, get shell-shocked with our weekend midnight screenings of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze, and dance with Fred Astaire in our matinee screenings of The Sky’s The Limit.

See you at the movies

Snowpiercer

A film by Joon-ho Bong starring Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton

South Korea’s highest grossing film! Based on the groundbreaking 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by writers Jacques Lob and Benjamin Legrand and artist Jean-Marc Rochette.

“An enormously ambitious, visually stunning and richly satisfying futuristic epic from the gifted Korean genre director Bong Joon-ho. ”
Variety

South Korean Director Joon-ho Bong (The Host, Mother) takes popular genre films to a visionary new level in this post-apocalyptic film. A failed global warming experiment has left planet Earth in an ice age and forced humanity’s last survivors aboard a globe-spanning super train. One man (Chris Evans) will risk everything to lead a revolt for control of the engine and the future of the world.

A film by Monty Python starring John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin

One down, five to go.

For the first time in more than three decades, comedy legends Monty Python will perform live on stage together this year. Broadcast from London’s O2 Arena, Monty Python Live (mostly) will play in cinemas around the globe.

At a combined age of just 358, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin will once again perform some of their greatest hits, with modern, topical, Pythonesque twists.

Purchase advance tickets online

Join Chicago Tribune sports columnist Steve Rosenbloom and movie critic Michael Phillips for a 25th anniversary screening of Field of Dreams. You’ll want to catch this baseball classic with your whole family. Rosenbloom and Phillips will lead a post-screening discussion with Dwier Brown, the actor who played John Kinsella, the father of Kevin Costner’s character.

Field of Dreams

A film by Phil Alden Robinson starring Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones

Kevin Costner stars as an Iowa farmer who hears a mysterious voice telling him to turn his cornfield into a baseball diamond. He does, but the voice’s directions don’t stop — even after the spirits of deceased ballplayers turn up to play. James Earl Jones and Burt Lancaster co-star as a reclusive writer and a young slugger turned doctor, respectively, with Ray Liotta turning in a pivotal performance as “Shoeless” Joe Jackson.

The Sky’s the Limit

A film by Edward H. Griffith starring Fred Astaire, Joan Leslie, Robert Benchley

Fred Astaire is a highly decorated flying ace on leave in New York City and looking to have a good time out of uniform. While on furlough, he meets Joan Leslie, a magazine photographer, and sets out to win her heart. Trouble is, Joan’s a real patriot and sees uniformless Fred as a draft-dodging ne’er-do-well! A startlingly frank exploration of war-time realities, exemplified in Fred Astaire’s glass-smashing take on “One for My Baby.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Secret of the Ooze

A film by Michael Pressman starring Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo

Those teen turtles are back for more partying, pizza and ninjutsu! Shredder, seeking revenge against the turtles, gets ahold of some toxic ooze to make his own mutant ninjas: Tokka and Rahzar! Featuring some of the hippest music of the day (Vanilla Ice, yo!) and some sight gags and jokes that can really warp a 10-year-old’s sense of humor, this is probably the definitive Turtles experience.
