It’s A Wonderful Life! White Christmas! The Punk Singer!

Thursday, December 12th, 2013

Happy Holidays Music Boxers,

The Christmas season is upon us, which means it’s time for a Chicago holiday tradition: The 30th Annual Music Box Christmas Show! For 30 years, the Music Box has brought the beloved classic films White Christmas and It’s A Wonderful Life to the big screen. Join us for a single or double feature and don’t forget, each screening begins with a sing-a-long with the one and only Santa Claus! There are still tickets available for many of our shows, but they are going fast. Purchase advance tickets now.

If Bing Crosby and Jimmy Stewart don’t get you in the Christmas spirit, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. On Tuesday, Dec 17, it’s The Alternative Christmas Double Feature. Bill Murray stars as a heartless TV executive who learns the true meaning of Christmas the hard way in Scrooged, while Billy Bob Thornton is the rudest, drunkest St. Nick ever committed to film in Bad Santa. Single feature and double feature tickets on sale now.

The Punk Singer tells the story of Kathleen Hanna, the feminist icon who rose to prominence as lead singer of the punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre. This new documentary takes viewers on a fascinating tour of contemporary music and offers a view into the life of this fearless leader. BadAss Digest calls it “Unnegotiated truth, a frank and exhilarating portrayal of a legend”.

Before you see the sequel, see how the legend began, with our midnight screenings of Anchorman, starring Will Ferrell in an iconic role. A limited number of special $5 tickets are available to this uproarious comedy.

Early next week, stage comes to the screen! On Monday, Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller pull double duty in National Theatre Live presents Frankenstein (Advance tickets on sale). On Wednesday, The Royal Shakespeare Company presents Richard II, starring David Tennant (Advance tickets on sale).

We also have a Second Saturday Silent Cinema presentation of Harold Lloyd’s The Freshman with live organ accompaniment (Advance tickets on sale), weekend screenings of Bettie Page Reveals All, a Friday afternoon screening of episodes of the vintage cartoon Clutch Cargo (Advance tickets on sale), and a special Wednesday night screening of the romantic drama The Happy Sad (Advance tickets available).

Finally, close out 2013 with New Year’s Eve with Moulin Rouge! We’ll be ringing in the new year with the bombastic musical, a champagne toast, live music, and more! Tickets on sale now!

See you at the movies

The Punk Singer

A film by Sini Anderson

“It f**king rocks.”
Flixist

Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of the punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre, rose to national attention as the reluctant but never shy voice of the riot grrrl movement. She became one of the most famously outspoken feminist icons, a cultural lightning rod. Her critics wished she would just shut-up, and her fans hoped she never would. So in 2005, when Hanna stopped shouting, many wondered why. Through 20 years of archival footage and intimate interviews with Hanna, THE PUNK SINGER takes viewers on a fascinating tour of contemporary music and offers a never-before-seen view into the life of this fearless leader.

Royal Shakespeare Company presents Richard II

Purchase advance tickets online

National Theatre Live is the groundbreaking initiative by the UK’s National Theatre to provide high-definition filmed performances of its productions to theaters worldwide.

Live from Stratford-upon-Avon marks a new collaboration between the RSC and Picturehouse Cinemas. Together we will screen our productions live from Shakespeare’s home town for the very first time, starting with our forthcoming production of Richard II, directed by Artistic Director, Gregory Doran.

NT Live broadcasts have now been experienced by over 1.5 million people in 500 venues around the world. Each broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theatre, cameras are carefully positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure that cinema audiences get the “best seat in the house” view of each production.

Richard II

A film by Gregory Doran starring David Tennant, Emma Hamilton

A story of power and plotting, Richard II is the first of Shakespeare’s four plays about the House of Lancaster.

Richard is King, ordained by God to lead his people. But he is also a man of very human weakness. A man whose vanity threatens to divide the great houses of England and drag his people into a dynastic civil war that will last 100 years.

National Theatre Live presents Frankenstein

A film by Danny Boyle starring Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch

Oscar-winner Danny Boyle (127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire) returned to the theatre to direct this visionary production with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller.

“A thrill. The most viscerally exciting and stunning show in town.”
The Telegraph

“A monster hit.”
Time Out London

Frankenstein enjoyed a sell-out run at the National Theatre, and went on to win awards including the 2012 Olivier Award for Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller.

First broadcast to cinemas in 2011, don’t miss this second chance to catch Danny Boyle’s electrifying stage production as encore screenings take place across the UK and around the world from June 2012.

Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch alternated the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature throughout the show’s run at the National Theatre. Many cinemas will offer the chance to see both of these versions.

Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.

Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.

Performance Running Time: Approximately 2 hours (no interval)

Suitable only for 15yrs+

The Happy Sad

Two young couples in New York—one black and gay, one white and heterosexual—find their lives intertwined as they create new relationship norms, explore sexual identity, and redefine monogamy.

The Happy Sad

A film by Rodney Evans starring Leroy McClain, Sorel Carradine, Charlie Barnett

Armed with art and unbridled optimism, Stan brunches with his girlfriend Annie, a schoolteacher, only to discover that she wants to take a break. Aaron confronts his boyfriend Marcus about their open relationship. The lives of these two couples become intertwined when Stan and Marcus meet online and hook up. Apparently, Stan has a bi-side, and Aaron walks in on the aftermath of Marcus and Stan’s afternoon tryst.

Meanwhile, Annie goes on a blind date with an older man David who makes his living writing scripts for reality TV shows, which feels more “real” than Stan’s afternoons spent in the rehearsal space with his band. Annie confides in her fellow teacher Mandy about her relationship troubles. Mandy and Annie engage in some flirtation and decide to try a lesbian relationship, which, in turn, reminds Annie that perhaps she was in love with Stan all along.

Eventually all of these characters must face the consequences of their choices and decide what matters to them most.

Clutch Cargo

Clutch Cargo is an animated television series produced by Cambria Productions and syndicated beginning on March 9, 1959.

In all, 52 Clutch Cargo adventures were produced and then serialized in five five-minute chapters each. The first four chapters naturally ended in cliffhangers, with the fifth chapter concluding the adventure. Haas explained the format of the show: “Each story is done in five five-minute segments so the stations can run one a day on weekdays, then recap the whole for a half-hour Saturday show. It’s flexible and works very well.”
