Crispin Glover! Like Father Like Son! Oscar Documentary Shorts!

Thursday, January 30th, 2014

Happy Thursday Music Boxers,

This Friday at 8pm, actor-director-writer Crispin Hellion Glover (Back To The Future, Willard) returns to the Music Box for a multi-faceted multimedia performance. First, he performs a live dramatic narration of his books, with the illustrations projected behind him. Then the audience will enjoy a screening of Glover’s second film It is Fine. EVERYTHING IS FINE!, a semi-autobiographical, psycho-sexual tale about a man with severe cerebral palsy and a fetish for girls with long hair. Afterwards, Glover will host a Q&A and a first time showing of newly shot clips of his work in progress feature film which will be the first time Glover and his father Bruce Glover (Chinatown, Ghost World) share the screen! Advance tickets on sale now.

In Like Father, Like Son, a successful businessman learns that his biological son was switched with another child after birth, and he must make a life-changing decision and choose his true son or the boy he raised as his own. The RedEye calls this touching family drama “Quietly thrilling”.

Before you fill out your Academy Award predictions, make sure you catch the 2014 Oscar-Nominated Documentary Shorts! This will be the only opportunity for audiences to watch the nominated shorts prior to the 86th Academy Awards® ceremony on Sunday, March 2, 2014. The Music Box will screen the Oscar-Nominated Documentary Shorts in two programs.

On Tuesday, get ready for the winter games with a special screening of Cool Runnings, presented by RedEye. John Candy stars in the unlikely (but true!) tale of a Jamaican bobsled team in the 1988 Winter Olympics. Advance tickets on sale now.

We also have matinee screenings of the grandiose Italian film The Great Beauty (Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film) and Glenn Ford in the comedy-noir hybrid Mr. Soft Touch (Not available on DVD!). Our midnight screenings are Terry Gilliam’s dystopian masterpiece Brazil and horror-thriller Here Comes The Devil.

See you at the movies

It is Fine. Everything is Fine!

A film by Crispin Glover starring Steven C. Stewart

It Is Fine! EVERYTHING IS FINE goes into uncharted cinematic territory with screenwriter Steven C. Stewart starring in this semi-autobiographical, psycho-sexual, tale about a man with severe cerebral palsy and a fetish for girls with long hair.

Part horror film, part exploitation picture and part documentary of a man who cannot express his sexuality in the way he desires, (due to his physical condition), this fantastical and often humorous tale is told completely from Stewart’s actual point of view; that of someone who has lived for years watching people do things he will never be able to do. Here, Stewart’s character is something of a lady killer, seducing a troubled, recently divorced mother (Margit Carstensen), her teenage daughter and any number of other ladies he encounters along the way. According to Crispin Glover, Stewart “wanted to show that handicapped people are human, sexual and can be horrible. He also states that It is Fine! EVERYTHING IS FINE. will probably be the best film he has anything to do with in his entire career. Crispin Glover and his co-director David Brothers wanted to bring Stewart’s story to the screen

Like Father Like Son

In Like Father, Like Son, acclaimed director Kore-eda Hirokazu (Nobody Knows, I Wish) has created another fully realized and deeply touching family drama.

“Relentlessly quiet character study that is photographed with Zen remove and scored metronomically to Bach and Beethoven, each scene clipped to the barest essentials.”
Time Out New York

Brazil

A film by Terry Gilliam starring Jonathan Pryce, Kim Greist, Robert De Niro

In Terry Gilliam’s dystopian masterpiece, Jonathan Pryce plays a daydreaming everyman who finds himself caught in the soul-crushing gears of a nightmarish bureaucracy. A clerical error causes a massive chain reaction of mistaken identity, destroying Pryce’s life as he knows it when he is declared an enemy of the state. A strangely prescient tale, and one well worth revisiting in our current era of drone warfare and NSA-wiretapping.

Here Comes the Devil

A film by Adrián García Bogliano starring Laura Caro, Francisco Barreiro, Michele Garcia

A couple’s preteen son and daughter inexplicably reappear after being lost overnight on a desolate, cave-riddled mountainside. Becoming withdrawn and beginning to exhibit strange behavior, their parents quickly assume something sinister happened to them while missing and alone.

But after hearing an ominous local legend… the concerned mother and father begin to realize that their children may have fallen prey to something inhuman – and that this dark, unstoppable evil has now returned home with them.

Mr Soft Touch

A film by Henry Levin & Gordon Douglas starring Glenn Ford, Evelyn Keyes, John Ireland

This film is one of the oddest combinations of genres we’ve ever seen: romantic comedy, schmaltzy sentiment and hardboiled noir. Glenn Ford stars as Joe Miracle, a WWII vet who’s returned to the city seeking vengeance on the gangsters who stole his nightclub and murdered his partner. Hiding from the heat, he winds up in a homeless shelter run by angelic Evelyn Keyes. Cue the romance! “In headlong flight he paused… to live a lifetime in 36 thrill-packed hours… with this woman!” Not on DVD!

The Great Beauty

A film by Paolo Sorrentino starring Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, Sabrina Ferilli

“An outlandishly entertaining hallucination.”
New York Times

“A masterpiece, a grand swooning epic, lush to the point of insanity.”
–Catherine Shoard, The Guardian

Rome, Italy, lush, timeless, opulent, and home to journalist Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo of Il divo and Gomorrah). Since the early success of his one and only novel decades ago, Jep has been a permanent fixture in the city’s literary and social circles and has thoroughly enjoyed every pleasure Rome has to offer.

But as his sixty-fifth birthday comes and goes, Jep finds himself beginning to take stock of his life; looking past the extravagant nightclubs, parties, and cafes to see himself and Rome in a new light. Called “A Technicolor La Dolce Vita for the Berlusconi era,” The Great Beauty is a sensuous epic, a breathtaking feast for the senses and a compelling introspective journey into the life and mind of a man and the eternal city.
