Happy Thursday, Music Boxers!

This Friday, Music Box Films is very pleased to bring you the family film QUILL: THE LIFE OF A GUIDE DOG. Time Out New York says: “The real star is Rafie, the golden pup that plays Quill; dogs can be taught to sit or lie down, but they can’t fake the sort of connection he makes with the people around him.” You can also check out the adorable trailer here!

Also opening tomorrow is the Lebanese drama WHERE DO WE GO NOW? The New York Times says “The continually shifting tone… keeps you giddily off balance!”

We also can’t forget to mention that the Chicago International Film Festival’s annual youth festival CineYouth is just two weeks away! You can get all the details here!

See you at the movies!

Monsieur Lazhar

A film by Philippe Falardeau with English subtitles starring Fellag, Sophie Nélisse, Émilien Néron, Danielle Proulx, Brigitte Poupart

The story of an Algerian immigrant substitute teacher who brings emotional stability to a Montreal middle school class shaken by the suicide of their well-liked teacher.

“Quietly intelligent and respectable, much like its protag, pic has clear crowdpleaser appeal in the arthouse arena, as evidenced by its recent Locarno audience award win.”
–Boyd van Hoeij, Variety

“An intelligent, generally cheery comedy.”
indieWIRE

“It’s an exquisite, humanistic and subtly topical work of cinema art that manages to keep the intimate, revelatory sensibility of a one-man play intact while fleshing out the characters and creating a very realistic and richly detailed school community.”
Globe & Mail

“A delightful and deeply moving story.”
Toronto Star

Nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Monsieur Lazhar tells the poignant story of a Montreal middle school class shaken by the death of their well-liked teacher. Bachir Lazhar (Fellag), a 55-year-old Algerian immigrant, offers the school his services as a substitute teacher and is quickly hired. As he helps the children heal, he also learns to accept his own painful past.

This moving film features exquisite performances by Fellag and a stunning ensemble of child actors.

Where Do We Go Now?

A film by Nadine Labaki starring Claude Baz Moussawbaa

Set in a remote village where the church and the mosque stand side by side, Where Do We Go Now? follows the antics of the town’s women to keep their men from starting a religious war. Women heartsick over sons, husbands and fathers lost to previous flare-ups unite to distract their men with clever ruses, from faking a miracle to hiring a troop of Ukrainian strippers.

In this thought provoking new film the women of different religions in a remote Lebanese village band together and invent schemes to prevent their men from killing each other in the intractable religious conflict that surrounds their community. This entertaining and unlikely near-musical tears down stereotypes of women in the Middle East and uses humor to explore serious subjects, with one eye toward Aristophanes’ Lysistrata and the other toward Bollywood. Winning audience awards at the Toronto and San Sebastian Film Festivals after a successful premiere in Cannes, Labaki’s follow-up to the delicious Caramel is refreshing and unflinching. Inhabited by a cast of characters that promote an alternate vision of unity and sisterhood with irreverence and charming simplicity, the film gives short shrift to conventions and taboos. A Sony Pictures Classics release.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

A film by Jim Sharman starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Richard O'Brien, Charles Gray, Meatloaf, Barry Bostwick

This notorious horror parody — a fast-paced potpourri of camp, sci-fi and rock ‘n’ roll, among other things — tracks the exploits of naïve couple Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) after they stumble upon the lair of transvestite Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry). The film — a bizarre musical co-starring Meat Loaf and Richard O’Brien — bombed in its initial release but later gained a cult following at midnight showings.

The Outfit

A film by John Flynn starring Robert Duvall

In one of the greatest crime films ever made, Robert Duvall plays a man avenging his brother’s death at the hands of the mob. Released from prison, he teams up with his former partner to pillage the mob at their card games and collection points until he collects an amount of money he deems sufficient for his loss, or until they pay him off. Criminally under-seen, do not miss this!

A two-bit criminal takes on the Mafia to avenge his brother’s death in this drama based on a novel by Donald E. Westlake. Earl Macklin (Robert Duvall) is a small time criminal who is released from prison after an unsuccessful bank robbery only to discover that a pair of gunmen killed his brother. As it turns out, the bank that Earl and his brother hit was controlled by gangster Mailer (Robert Ryan). Macklin learns that he’s on the mob’s hit list as well, so he teams up with his old partner Cody (Joe Don Baker) to take on Mailer and his second in command, Jake Menner (Timothy Carey). The Outfit also features a top-notch supporting cast, including Karen Black, Sheree North, Joanna Cassidy, Richard Jaeckel, and Anita O’Day; Marie Windsor and Elisha Cook, Jr. also appear, 18 years after their memorable turn together in The Killing.
