Mother and Child

Mother and Child

“A beautifully acted ensemble. Naomi Watts and Annette Bening are fantastic.”
Mary Pols, Time Magazine

“A Powerhouse! Dynamite performances from Annette Bening and Naomi Watts ignite this strong drama.”
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Three women’s lives share a common core: they have all been profoundly affected by adoption. KAREN (Annette Bening) had a baby at 14, gave her up at birth, and has been haunted ever since by the daughter she never knew. ELIZABETH (Naomi Watts) grew up as an adopted child; she’s a bright and ambitious lawyer, but a flinty loner in her personal life. LUCY (Kerry Washington) is just embarking with her husband on the adoption odyssey, looking for a baby to become their own.

Mother and Child plays out beautifully, a familial song that grows and intertwines with each passing moment, and there are only a few bumps in the road to jolt the journey. At times, jumps in the story seem jarring, and could be handled more smoothly. The formation of Karen and Paco’s relationship is rushed in comparison to the slowly unfolding worlds of the three main characters, and the second of three jumps forward in time seems rushed and disjointed — thrown in rather than properly introduced or joined. But those are minor flaws of a greater, entertaining whole.

Babies

Babies

“Irresistible. I was riveted and completely charmed.”
A.O. Scott, New York Times

“Extraordinary! Delivered with refreshing immediacy and joyful humor.”
Claudia Puig, USA Today

A look at one year in the life of four babies from around the world.

The adventure of a lifetime begins…

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Thomas Balmès, from an original idea by producer Alain Chabat, Babies simultaneously follows four babies around the world – from birth to first steps. The children are, respectively, in order of on-screen introduction: Ponijao, who lives with her family near Opuwo, Namibia; Bayarjargal, who resides with his family in Mongolia, near Bayanchandmani; Mari, who lives with her family in Tokyo, Japan; and Hattie, who resides with her family in the United States, in San Francisco.

Re-defining the nonfiction art form, Babies joyfully captures on film the earliest stages of the journey of humanity that are at once unique and universal to us all.

Human Centipede

Human Centipede

“The star rating system is unsuited to this film. Is the movie good? Is it bad? Does it matter? ”
Rober Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

“A masterpiece of perverse originality, truly unique.”
Devin Faraci, CHUD

Two naive American college students traveling through Europe become lost and disoriented in the woods after their car breaks down.  They have the misfortune of stumbling upon the home and laboratory of mad scientist Dr. Heiter, a man once celebrated for his work separating Siamese twins who has now dedicated his life to the opposite cause—creating the perfect “human centipede.”

Lourdes

Lourdes

“Brilliant and satisfyingly illusive.”
Time Out London

“An accomplished work which radiates intelligence.”
Screen International

Winner – Best Film, Vienna International Film Festival

“A famed city of healing, Lourdes offers hope to countless Christian pilgrims who seek miracles. Not particularly pious herself, Christine, a wheelchair-bound young woman, takes trips with a church group mostly to escape her solitary life. With pitch-perfect sincerity, filmmaker Jessica Hausner nestles Lourdes between religious satire and redemption story. Though she delights in the comical, Hausner is driven by curiosity, not cynicism. She approaches the subject of miracles less interested in whether they’re real than in what they awake in us.” —Sundance Film Festival
