Monsieur Lazhar

A film by Philippe Falardeau with English subtitles starring Fellag, Sophie Nélisse, Émilien Néron, Danielle Proulx, Brigitte Poupart

The story of an Algerian immigrant substitute teacher who brings emotional stability to a Montreal middle school class shaken by the suicide of their well-liked teacher.

“Quietly intelligent and respectable, much like its protag, pic has clear crowdpleaser appeal in the arthouse arena, as evidenced by its recent Locarno audience award win.”
–Boyd van Hoeij, Variety

“An intelligent, generally cheery comedy.”
indieWIRE

“It’s an exquisite, humanistic and subtly topical work of cinema art that manages to keep the intimate, revelatory sensibility of a one-man play intact while fleshing out the characters and creating a very realistic and richly detailed school community.”
Globe & Mail

“A delightful and deeply moving story.”
Toronto Star

Nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Monsieur Lazhar tells the poignant story of a Montreal middle school class shaken by the death of their well-liked teacher. Bachir Lazhar (Fellag), a 55-year-old Algerian immigrant, offers the school his services as a substitute teacher and is quickly hired. As he helps the children heal, he also learns to accept his own painful past.

This moving film features exquisite performances by Fellag and a stunning ensemble of child actors.

Henning Mankell’s Wallander: The Revenge

A film by Charlotte Brandstrom with English subtitles starring Krister Henriksson, Lena Endre, Fredrik Gunnarsson, Mats Bergman

From the producers of the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Revenge is based on an original story by “The Godfather of Swedish Crime” Henning Mankell, featuring his most popular character, the titular chief inspector Kurt Wallander (Krister Henriksson).

“The Godfather of Swedish Crime”
The Washington Post

The Revenge begins with Kurt Wallander celebrating his 62nd birthday, having achieved his lifelong dream of purchasing a house by the sea.

Suddenly, a heavy explosion disrupts the peace and quiet in Ystad, knocking out the town’s lone power transformer. When more explosions follow, the military is called in and the little town starts to look like a war zone. Are the explosions acts of sabotage? Or terrorism directed at a local Islamic exhibition? Everything is in chaos as Wallander navigates through the darkness to track down the culprits.

–Doris Toumarkine, Film Journal

Thief

A film by Michael Mann starring James Caan

James Caan is an expert safe-cracker who gets himself caught up with the Chicago mob. ‘Encouraged’ to do an insanely risky heist, Caan soon finds himself on the wrong side of a mob boss. Shot on location in Chicago, Mann’s neon noir (complete with Tangerine Dream soundtrack) is as much a thrilling caper movie as it is a guided tour along the streets of Chicago. Oh yeah, and they blow up The Green Mill.

A professional safecracker, who specializes in high-profile diamond heists, plans to use his ill-gotten income for a nice retirement. But when he signs on with a top gangster and then tries to quit, the mob comes after the thief and his girlfriend.
