How To Survive A Plague! Superstars of Burlesque! The Telephone Book!
Thursday, September 20th, 2012

Happy Thursday Music Boxers,

This week, we’re proud to open How To Survive A Plague. David France’s new documentary focuses on two coalitions — ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group) — whose activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. Currently rated 100% “Fresh” on RottenTomatoes.com.

On Friday night, Studio L’amour presents Superstars of Burlesque. The world’s top teasers descend on the Music Box for a night of glitz, glamour and nearly nude debauchery. Shows are at 7:30pm and 10pm. Regular admission and VIP tickets on sale now.

Friday and Saturday at midnight, the Music Box and Mr. Skin present The Telephone Book, one of the greatest cult films you’ve probably never heard of. Producer and legendary ad man Merv Bloch, who has worked with the likes of Woody Allen, Orson Welles and Alfred Hitchcock, will be on hand to discuss the making of the film and his career running ad campaigns for some of cinema’s most iconic films. Tickets on sale now.

We also have the return of the Chicago United Film Festival, featuring a diverse program of features, documentaries, shorts, and classic films (Tickets on sale now), the classic Busby Berkley musical Gold Diggers of 1933 and late night screenings of the hit indie comedy Sleepwalk With Me.

See you at the movies. . .

How to Survive a Plague

A film by David France starring Bill Bahlman, David Barr and Gregg Bordowitz

Faced with their own mortality, an improbable group of young people — many of them HIV-positive young men — broke the mold as radical warriors taking on Washington and the medical establishment.

“Words like “important” and “inspiring” tend too often to be meaninglessly attached to non-fiction filmmaking, but in the case of David France’s compelling snapshot of a revolutionary period in AIDS treatment, they are amply justified.”
The Hollywood Reporter

The activism and innovation of ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group) turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. Despite having no scientific training, these self-made activists infiltrated the pharmaceutical industry and helped identify promising new drugs, moving them from experimental trials to patients in record time.

With unfettered access to a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival footage from the 1980s and ’90s, filmmaker David France puts the viewer smack in the middle of the controversial actions, the heated meetings, the heartbreaking failures, and the exultant breakthroughs of heroes in the making.

Studio L’amour presents the most ambitious and spectacular burlesque show ever to hit Chicago.

A cast of over 25 performers will grace the stage at Chicago’s Historic Music Box Theatre for Superstars of Burlesque. Every act is a Burlesque Hall of Famer – Michelle L’amour (2005), Imogen Kelly (2012), Dirty Martini (2004), Russell Bruner (2012), Roxi D’Lite (2010), Frenchie Kiss and Jett Adore (2012), Dolls of Doom (2010), Julie Atlas Muz (2006), Kalani Kokonuts (2009), Chicago Starlets (2010) and Foxy Tann and the Wham Bam Thank You Ma’ams (2006). All titanic talent hosted by none other than “Mr.” Showbiz – Murray Hill.

And as if that wasn’t enough, for the first time Superstars of Burlesque is bringing a guest of honor to the stage – a living legend of burlesque – B-Movie vixen and former wife of sexploitation king Russ Meyer – Miss Kitten Natividad.

It’s an unstoppable lineup of incredible striptease expertise. And it’s only in Chicago at the Music Box Theatre.

Mr. Skin Presents: The Telephone Book

A film by Nelson Lyon starring Margaret Brewster, Roger C. Carmel and David Dozer

The film stars an unknown beauty named Sara Kennedy (a distant relative of the Kennedy family) and features Jill Clayburgh (Academy Award nominee for An Unmarried Woman) in one of her early screen roles. Also appearing in the move are an eclectic group of actors, including Barry Morse, William Hickey, Roger C Carmel and Norman Rose. Andy Warhol regulars Ultra Violet, Ondine and Geri Miller are also in the cast, as was Warhol himself, though his scene was later cut and subsequently lost. A substantial reward is being offered for any information leading to the recover of the lost Warhol footage.

Producer and legendary ad-man Merv Bloch will be on hand both nights to discuss the making of this fascinating film, as well as his own career running ad campaigns for some of cinema’s most iconic films.

Gold Diggers of 1933

A film by Mervyn LeRoy starring Warren William, Joan Blondell, and Aline MacMahon

Three gold-digging roommates aim to skip the breadlines in this Busby Berkeley musical. Coin-clad Ginger Rogers warbles “We’re In The Money” while Ruby Keeler falls for tunesmith Dick Powell and Joan Blondell fends off upperclass lecher Warren William. Including the downright smutty “Pettin’ in the Park” number.

Sleepwalk With Me

A film by Mike Birbiglia and Seth Barrish starring Mike Birbiglia, Lauren Ambrose and Kevin Barnett

“An endearing indie feature about the day-to-day indecisions and nocturnal perambulations of a commitment-phobic New Yorker.”

“I’m going to tell you a story and it’s true… I always have to tell people that.” So asserts comedian-turned-playwright-turned-filmmaker Mike Birbiglia directly to the viewer at the outset of his autobiographically-inspired, fictional feature debut.

We are thrust into the tale of a burgeoning stand-up comedian struggling with the stress of a stalled career, a stale relationship threatening to race out of his control, and the wild spurts of severe sleepwalking he is desperate to ignore.

Based on the successful one-man show, Sleepwalk with Me engages in the kind of passionate and personal storytelling that transfigures intimate anguish into comic art.
