Cheap Thrills tells the story of a new father facing eviction whose life is turned upside down when he meets a wealthy couple who offer a path to a better life…but at a price. Actor Pat Healy in person opening night!

“One of the most involving works of cinematic misanthropy in years.”
–John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter

Cheap Thrills follows Craig (Pat Healy, Compliance), a struggling family man who loses his low-wage job and is threatened with eviction. In an effort to delay facing the music at home, he heads to a local bar and encounters an old friend (Ethan Embry, Empire Records). The two friends are roped into a round of drinks by a charismatic and obscenely wealthy stranger (David Koechner, Anchorman 2) along with his mysterious wife (Sara Paxton, The Innkeepers). The couple engages the two friends in a series of innocent dares in exchange for money over the course of the evening, with each challenge upping the ante in both reward and boundaries. It seems like easy and much needed money, but the couple’s twisted sense of humor pushes just how far Craig and his friend are willing to go for money and cheap thrills.

Charlie Chaplin’s 100th Anniversary

starring Charlie Chaplin

In 1914 a funny looking and very annoying man wearing a bowler hat and a cane wandered into The Kid Auto Races in Venice, California and ended up delighting the admittedly confused crowd with his antics. This early version of guerrilla filmmaking was the very first appearance of Charlie Chaplin as his “Tramp” character. In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of “The Tramp”, we’ve put together a program of Chaplin’s early shorts, including KID AUTO RACES!
The full lineup includes:
Kid Auto Races
The New Janitor
Mabel’s Married Life
The Floorwalker
The Immigrant

Breadcrumb Trail

A film by Lance Bangs

Feature length documentary about the band Slint and the Louisville music culture they emerged from.

Throughout the 1980s, a group of friends in Louisville, Kentucky grew up forming bands, breaking up, and reforming in different configurations. They were playing hardcore shows at ages 10-12, touring with Samhain as 14 year olds, recording for Homestead as Squirelbait at age 15, then formed Slint in their late teens and recorded the classic album Spiderland before they were 21. They broke up before the album’s release, giving no interviews and vanishing into their own shadows. Two decades passed as filmmaker Lance Bangs assembled unseen footage of the teenagers writing and arranging Spiderland as well as the first on camera interviews with the band members and their contemporaries trying to decipher what they had been through. Featuring interviews with Slint, Steve Albini, Ian Mackaye, David Grubbs, David Yow, James Murphy and archival material from Will Oldham. Q&A with director Lance Bangs following the film

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

A film by Mel Stuart starring Gene Wilder

Candy is dandy! Join us for the strangest tour an industrialist could ever offer! Right from the pages of Roald Dahl and onto the screen with the help of director Mel Stuart, enjoy this candied masterpiece!

The world is astounded when Willy Wonka, for years a recluse in his factory, announces that five lucky people will be given a tour of the factory, shown all the secrets of his amazing candy, and one will win a lifetime supply of Wonka chocolate.

Nobody wants the prize more than young Charlie, but as his family is so poor that buying even one bar of chocolate is a treat, buying enough bars to find one of the five golden tickets is unlikely in the extreme. But in movieland, magic can happen. Charlie, along with four somewhat odious other children, get the chance of a lifetime and a tour of the factory.

Found Footage Festival

The annual touring festival showcases VHS oddities from the world’s garage sales, thrift stores warehouses and dumpsters.

The Found Footage Festival is a one-of-a-kind event showcasing videos found at garage sales and thrift stores and in warehouses and dumpsters throughout North America. Curators Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher take audiences on a guided tour of their latest and greatest VHS finds, providing live commentary and where-are-they-now updates on the people in these videotaped obscurities. From the curiously-produced industrial training video to the forsaken home movie donated to Goodwill, the Found Footage Festival resurrects these forgotten treasures and serves them up in a lively celebration of all things found.

Among the new clips featured in the 2014 program:

  • A bizarre instructional video from 1997 with the redundant title, “How to Have Cybersex on the Internet”
  • “Special Delivery”—a 1994 video for dog breeders about a process known as “whelping”
  • Newly unearthed footage of the world’s most obnoxious home shopping hosts, John & Johnny (c. 1987), and the long-awaited reunion orchestrated by the FFF curators 26 years later
  • 101 Jesuses culled from dozens of religious videos, presented in under 3 minutes
