Rarely has a filmmaker's style so complimented a piece of classic literature than stop-motion master Jan Svenkmejer adapting Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Many of the best children’s stories play into the macabre nature of the horrors of adolescence. The body changes, nothing anyone tells you makes sense, and authority needs to be challenged. In this adaptation, household items shift and change, shrink and grow, and the ground beneath you gives way to new routes and avenues of exploration. Inspired in equal parts by French surrealism, Czech folk art and taxidermy, Alice (1988) combines intricate stop-motion with puppetry, and horrifying surrealism with a child-like sense of discovery. Come enjoy one of the most unique objects of Animation History!
