Coming off the success of his breakout role in the critically and culturally acclaimed Boyz N the Hood, hip-hop icon Ice Cube (along with frequent collaborator DJ Pooh) marked his writing debut with Friday, which also marked the directorial debut of music video veteran F. Gary Gray. A relaxed stoner hangout movie of the very best kind, Friday takes place during one special summer day in South Central Los Angeles – where anything that can happen, does happen. Ice Cube stars as 22-year-old Craig Jones, recently let go from his job (on his day off) and now faced with the pressures of his loving, demanding, dog-catching father (played by the late John Witherspoon). Costarring Regina King, Chris Tucker, and Nia Long, with Tommy Lister Jr. as cinema’s greatest neighborhood bully, and a memorable turn by the late Bernie Mac. A cult-classic that spawned multiple sequels, Friday is best served with a big audience and a lot of popcorn.
