NOIR CITY presents a spectacular new restoration of Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Samourai, one of the director’s most perfectly realized works of existential coolness and dread. Alain Delon plays Jef Costello, a sleek and self-possessed assassin whose latest contract puts him in a struggle for survival. Melville’s aesthetic exercise in style was both a tribute to the vintage crime movies he loved and a touchstone for generations of filmmakers. The visual style and hypnotic rhythms achieve a state of Noir Nirvana.
