One of Rollin's most clever and prescient takes on the vampire genre depicts a coven of aristocratic women who feed on blood as a "health tonic,” developing a taste that animal blood can no longer satisfy. Meeting annually "outside society" at a private chateau, the women await an unsuspecting male victim. Then an enterprising thief escapes into the woods to this remote chateau. There, he begins a sadistic game of sexual and mental manipulation as he awaits the cover of nightfall, unaware that a secretive evil is also scheduled to arrive. FASCINATION pairs the dark surrealism of Rollin's work with a role-reversing play on "captive" and "captor", done with pacing that is at times almost transcendent. It contains some of Rollin's most potent, surreal, and dramatic imagery, with a haunting score to match.
