In 1953, Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe set sail to Paris and changed pop culture forever. The now iconic shocking pink dress, the ensemble of beautiful men, and Diamonds! Diamonds! Diamonds! Legendary director Howard Hawks’s one-and-only musical follows two showgirls – one eager to find a rich man and one eager to find a handsome man. Hijinks ensue with great comedy, lavish production numbers (staged by Jack Cole and the legendary Gwen Verdon), and beautiful Technicolor cinematography. The film also features what Queer film historian Vito Russo described as “the most homoerotic sequence in a [Howard] Hawks film,” as Jane Russell performs “Ain’t There Anyone Here For Love?” while surrounded by muscular, half-naked men who’d rather pay attention to each other than to her. At the center of the film is the legendary “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” one of Marilyn Monroe’s crowning achievements. -Zack Paslay
