The Unarius Academy of Science were on a radical mission in the ‘70s and ‘80s: to spread their “inter-dimensional science of life” and principles of past-life therapy via some of most wildly prolific and inventive public access TV programming in America. Utilizing otherworldly costumes and makeup, guerilla location-filming techniques, and ingenious no-budget special effects, this folk-healing collective produced a legacy of some of the most mind-melting, oddly uplifting gems of American outsider cinema. This mixtape offers a sampling of very rarely seen clips including iconic videos from the Unarius video archive.

With the blessing of the Unarius Academy of Science, we present the first theatrical release of their spectacular DIY sci-fi lodestone THE ARRIVAL. This otherworldly expression of cosmic optimism unveils the interstellar origin story of one of the most vibrant spiritual utopian movements to emerge from a post-WWII America. Shot on a shoestring budget outside suburban San Diego, THE ARRIVAL is a religious epic in miniature featuring a man who must reckon with his forgotten past, robotic minions of a corrupt intergalactic empire, benevolent Space Brothers, and the ever-loving Archangel Uriel. With a time-bending plot, dazzling optical SFX and a rousing soundtrack performed on homemade synths, it’s as if special effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull joined forces with Ed Wood and ABBA. As an expression of UFO culture, THE ARRIVAL stands in luminous contrast to the darker, conspiratorial turn that field took as the Eighties went on—and Unariuns claim the film serves as a catalyst to send viewers into transcended states of spiritual ecstasy.
