Presented by SUPER-HORROR-RAMA!
September 26 & 27, SUPER-HORROR-RAMA! presents a pair of late-nite excursions to Uncanny Valley that’ll leave you glassy-eyed with shock and rigid with terror! Both screenings will be introduced by guest programmer Nicola McCafferty, a PhD candidate at Northwestern and the After Dark programmer at the Chicago International Film Festival!
Mannequins populate our wildest dreams and our worst nightmares. They sell us fantasies of a life made complete in the things we buy, and they appear throughout pop culture as idealized versions of ourselves, fetish objects, and reminders of the thin veil between the living and the dead, humans and nonhumans. Tourist Trap (1979) and Hatchet for the Honeymoon (1970) spotlight the most unsettling qualities of mannequins and the places we find them, from roadside attractions to dress shops, and you'll soon see you CAN have it all...if you pay for it with your soul.
The feature debut of David Schmoeller, who later gave us the equally uncanny Puppetmaster (1989), Tourist Trap is about roadtrippers who stumble on a middle-of-nowhere museum of animated mannequins that keep the past alive. The custodian keeps a replica of his late wife enshrined under spotlight, and his telekinetic brother terrorizes visitors and uses their bodies to make a fresh batch of mannequins. If you're a fan of Psycho (1960), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), and Carrie (1976), you need to experience this phenomenal mashup with a haunting original score by Pino Donaggio!
We're also screening Mario Bava's Hatchet for the Honeymoon (1970) on Saturday, September 27 at 11:45pm!
Every ticket includes a Limited Edition Pinback Button (new design each night), and every show kicks off with Giveaways donated by The Shadowboxery, Cryptid Craft Studio, Night Natalie, Drive-In Asylum, and Full Bleed Zine for the first folks who answer our trivia questions. The category is mannequin movies, so get ready!
