Arguably one of history's finest and most influential filmmakers, especially on Western cinema, Akira Kurosawa's works were not only exquisite examples of composition and performance, but they also featured a combination of compassion, humanistic clarity, and humor that made his films singular and translatable around the world. This nine-film series of new restorations of some of his most enduring works illustrates Kurosawa's depth and range--from the life-affirming ache of IKIRU and epic action-adventure SEVEN SAMURAI to the humor-infused (and clear STAR WARS source material) THE HIDDEN FORTRESS and retooled Shakespeare THRONE OF BLOOD.
All films will be screened in new 4K restorations by Toho Co., Ltd., with the exception of DRUNKEN ANGEL (screening in 35mm), and RASHOMON (2K restoration by the Academy Film Archive, the National Film Center of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and Kadokawa Pictures, Inc.).
