Based on a script by famed sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury, this tale of an amateur astronomer and a schoolteacher who discover a mysterious meteorite crash in the Arizona desert set the stage for a cascade of imitators. As the two investigate further, it becomes apparent that the object may in fact be of alien origin, and when the local townsfolk begin to act strangely, no one can be trusted.
Predating Jack Finney’s The Body Snatchers novel by a year, this prototypical extraterrestrial/Cold War paranoia thriller not only cemented its director Jack Arnold (CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN) as a force to be reckoned with, but also influenced a generation of young filmmakers such as John Carpenter and Joe Dante. - Text courtesy of the Belcourt Theatre
